We must all try to halt and reverse the damage caused by greenhouse gases and the accelerating climate change. But did you know that “climate action failure” has been rated as the most likely and far-reaching global risk by the World Economic Forum?

Subsequently, at Duni Group, we must keep improving our products and operations. By 2030, we aim to phase out single-use virgin fossil plastics and ensure fossil-free manufacturing and supply chains. We will rely on accredited carbon offsetting projects for residual climate impact that we can’t address.

Aligning with the Paris Agreement

Our first critical step towards reaching net-zero CO2 emissions is to focus on our own operations (GHG Protocol scope 1 and 2). In parallel, we also review our entire value chain (scope 3) to set relevant targets.

As an enabler, we commit to Science-Based Targets (SBT) in 2022 to ensure our operations align with the 2015 Paris Agreement. We will go through the SBT validation and implement the required changes. Our aim is to have approved Science-Based Targets during 2023

Climate change is a huge challenge, and it is a scientific fact that human activities are the root cause. To help meet the Paris Agreement, everyone must take responsibility to reduce the adverse effects, including companies.

Duni Group aims to change the way we work, the type of energy we use, how we transport and store products and what raw materials we use in our products.

In 2021 Duni Group defined initiatives and actions towards a sustainable logistics set-up. One such initiative was a pilot testing HVO fueled transports for all customer deliveries in Denmark. The switch from fossil-based diesel to renewable HVO diesel could result in an 88% carbon emission reduction.

“Transports are a crucial supply chain link and we must make environmentally smart changes. This initiative is a first exploring step towards fossil free deliveries to our customers. It shows Duni Group’s commitment to investigate different solutions for all of the Group’s road transports together with our logistics partners,” says Lidija Peters, Sustainability Manager Logistics.

Most new diesel-powered trucks can use HVO (hydrogenated vegetable oil). It is made from renewable raw materials, such as residual waste and vegetable oils. The HVO diesel in the test has been also palm oil-free.

Robust and credible reporting is key to effective climate initiatives. Duni Group has partnered with Position Green to establish an online reporting platform for our GHG Protocol scope 1 and 2 impacts, including external verifications to enable auditing. The emissions are then calculated based on independent systems and official data to establish our climate impact.

Once we have completed our reporting platform for scope 3 emissions, it will be the foundation for setting Science-Based Targets, which will be ready in 2023.

Most of Duni Group’s internal greenhouse gas emissions come from our production and will be reduced within the GHG Protocol scopes 1 and 2. We have already come a long way. Our production and converting units in Europe now only use electricity from fossil-free sources.

One top example of our improvements is the installation of solar panels in Bramsche, Germany. Another good example is our unit in Skåpafors, Sweden, which is the first paper mill in the world to start replacing fossil LPG with bioLPG.

When working with the GHG Protocol scope 3, we expect that there will be residual CO2 emissions in the value chain by 2030 that we can’t control. We will consider investing in carbon offsetting projects according to the then relevant standards to balance this.

We already purchase credits that comply with the Verified Carbon Standard (VCS) for our leading portfolios for BioPak in Europe and the Bio Dunicel® and Bio Dunisoft® products. These credits are issued after the reductions have occurred, and the VCS Program has ensured the project's credibility.

Below are two projects that we are investing in:

Renun River Hydro, Indonesia

In the Sumatra inland, this VCS-certified project harvests the power offered by the 500-meter height difference between four rivers and a turbine station. The water runs in separate pipelines without a retaining dam. The project replaces fossil-fuel-derived energy in Indonesia’s electricity grid and provides job opportunities, schools, and infrastructure for the local community.

Huóshuĭ Small Hydropower, China

The VCS-certified Huóshuĭ Small Hydropower project in the mountainous regions of central China generates renewable energy for over 500,000 homes. Power from mountain rivers is a crucial source of renewable and stable energy for many remote communities, thanks to building 95 small hydropower plants in the region. More than 200 people are employed, mostly from ethnic minorities.

Sustainability is the backbone of Duni Group’s updated business strategy. To enable continuous improvements, we must follow up on our performance. To ensure relevant measurements, we have set key performance indicators (KPIs), which for the sustainability initiative Going net zero are:
